Human Resources

ORPC believes that HR is the most valuable asset of the Company. The HR Department thus has a very crucial role in the success of the Company and acts as a strategic partner.

The Department is responsible for directing the functions of manpower planning, employee recruitment and selection, employee training & development, performance appraisals, job analysis & design, leave, compensation, policy & organizational development, employee benefits, disciplinary actions, employee relations and welfare.

Training

The development of human resources has been instrumental in the Company’s growth and success. Our Training Centre initially concentrated on training fresh recruits to become plant operators and maintenance technicians. Today the Centre runs programmes in management, safety and other important areas to support the entire refinery operation. Since the early 1990s, young Technical College graduates are also being trained on a regular basis to ready them for positions in other oil and gas companies. The Individual Development Plan (IDP), introduced in 1999, is an integrated system for defining the skills and knowledge required, followed by prescribed training programmes designed to meet the needs of each individual.

Every year the Centre conducts a variety of technical programmes. Intensive short-term training programmes are also conducted for new operations and maintenance recruits in safety and refinery fundamentals. Regular programmes to develop operators and technicians have been launched with the overall aim of preparing them to meet the increasing challenges in improving productivity. In order to maintain international standards in training, the Centre ensures that all operators and technicians receive Level-3 NVQ Certification in their areas of specialization. ORPC is the first in Oman to have certified the technician’s Level-3 NVQ qualification in an industrial base.

Along with in-house training, a number of the staff attend overseas programmes in AGCC countries like the UK, Australia, Japan and India. Through the Professional Development Assistance Programmme, where costs are shared, many employees have taken the opportunity to attend evening classes for further education in various colleges and centres in the country.

The Training Centre has launched its first Open Learning Centre which houses computer based training in the key areas of core competencies. With today’s fast-changing technologies, new approaches and techniques have also been introduced to lower costs and provide more knowledge programmes.

Employee Welfare

ORPC’s employees are entitled to highly competitive compensation and benefits packages that are comparable to those of the leading companies in Oman’s Oil and Gas sector. Employees’ dependents are also entitled to free medical services and global life insurance. Interest-free housing loan schemes are another important staff benefit. Staff welfare is also a priority with the Company maintaining excellent living quarters at MAF for its staff close to the workplace. These complexes are equipped with a mess, recreation centre, swimming pool, football ground, tennis court and gymnasiums.

Omanization

ORPC adopted the Omanization process from early on and it has played a vital role in the Company’s development. The number of Omani employees since 1982 has grown steadily to 73.5% at present. Having systematically implemented the Omanization policy the Company has attracted more and more qualified young Omanis to occupy Technical and Administrative positions.
